BBQ Beer Can Chicken

**Before you start this, make sure your BBQ has enough clearance for this bird to stand up!**

Over the weekend I realized I didn’t have any recipes ready to go for this week. That’s poor planning on my part, but I sort of lucked out! While in Osoyoos, we decided on beer can chicken for dinner. Perfect opportunity to share with you one of my favorite ways to cook chicken.

Now some will say using a beer can is ‘unhealthy’ so if you do not want to use a beer can you can always purchase a ‘beer can chicken’ kit. I don’t have that, so we use cans. The chicken always comes out super moist, and oh so juicy. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite ways to cook chicken!

BBQ Beer Can Chicken

What you will need:

  • 1 whole chicken (roughly 4 lbs)
  • 1 large onion; quartered
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp. seasoning salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Garlic Plus seasoning (blend)
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 can of beer – we use whatever we have on hand – this was Old Milwaukee
  • disposable pie plate (small)

If your chicken has the neck and giblets inside remove before cooking.

Heat your BBQ to medium heat

Pat the chicken dry with some paper towel, rub the oil all over the chicken. Sprinkle with the seasoning and rub again. You want the chicken to be well seasoned.

Add the quartered onion to the cavity of the chicken.

Open your can of beer and drink about 1/3 of it (if you do not drink then just pour out a 1/3) Pour a approx. 3 Tbsp. of beer into your shallow pie plate and place the can of beer inside.

Working very carefully, slide the chicken onto the can. If the wings are flopping all over the place, tie off with butcher cord. You want to make sure the chicken is secure on the can.

Place pie plate and chicken onto the BBQ – cooking on medium heat, cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the juices run clear.

Remove from heat and let cool for about 5 minutes. Working carefully, remove the chicken from the can  *CAREFUL the juices will be HOT**

Carve and serve.

 BBQ Beer Can Chicken

This beer can chicken is so moist and juicy and is full of flavor. It’s always a hit in our family. This is one of my go to ways to cook chicken in the Summer months – we do a lot of BBQing, and this recipe never disappoints. The skin is crisp, the meat is tender and full of flavor. I usually cook two chicken just to have left overs.

I serve this with corn on the cobs and small baby potatoes – a perfect Summer dinner to enjoy outside with a cold one.
