The Benefits of the 20-20-20 Rule

Let’s chat about eye care, and how you can utilize the 20-20-20 rule in your day to day life.

You see, healthy eyes are very important to me. When I was a little girl, I developed a lazy eye. It was corrected when I was four with surgery, followed by blocking and finally with glasses. I even have the scar to prove it. I was lucky that it was caught at a young age and that it was treatable. Had my Mom not taken my sister and I to see an Optometrist, like the friendly ones at Image Optometry, I could have worse vision than I do now, and my sister may not have any vision at all. Since both my husband and I wear glasses, we knew taking the boys at an early age to see an Optometrist was a good idea.

Now, the boys love playing their video games and watching their T.V. shows. They have this uncanny way to zone right out. You know the scenario I am talking about; eyes looking forward, mouths slightly hanging open, eyes trained at the large television screen… Zombified. I swear my oldest could look at the T.V. all day long and not blink once. This is cause for concern. Staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause dryness, irritation, and leads to eye fatigue. This is due to lack of blinking. Did you know? The average person blinks about 15 times per minute, and that number can drop to as little as 5 blinks per minute whilst looking at a digital screen.

This is where the 20-20-20 rule comes in handy.

It’s very straight forward, every 20 minutes or so, take a break from the screen. Focus you eyes on an object at least 20 feet away from you for about 20 seconds. Blink rapidly. I find that by doing this, you can lubricate your eyes quickly and effectively, and it really does help with dryness.

We have adopted the 20-20-20 rule in our home, not only for the boys, but for myself as well. As a blogger, I’m at my computer on average 5 hours a day, maybe 5 or 6 days a week. Some days it can be more if I am writing recipes, checking all of my emails or editing photos after a photo shoot. Like so many others, you may spend the better part of your working day staring at a computer screen, or maybe you are just surfing the internet on your phone, or maybe you’re reading an e-book. Whatever your choice of device might be, taking the time to use the 20-20-20 throughout the day can help lessen the effects of dry eyes, irritation and fatigue. It’s simple enough to set a timer for 20 minute increments, or just becoming more aware of taking a break.

Be sure to switch things up too. Take a break from all the technology and go out and enjoy the outdoors. When my week is spent in front of the desktop, a change of scenery is always welcomed. Mind you, I usually have my camera in hand. Still, seeing beauty like this something I am thankful for.

To keep your eyes healthy and in tip top shape, be sure to use the 20-20-20 rule daily. It’s as easy as walking away from the screen, grabbing a glass a water and giving your eyes some rest.
